Free Art Foundation

SPECIAL NOTE FOR CUSTOMERS OF VANDER JAGT COMPUTERS

If you arrived at this page looking for http://www.winchesterpc.com (external link) then we apologize as we're having some confusing issues with the Apache2 server. It seems that http://winchesterpc.com (external link) (without the www.) is sending many people to the Free Art Foundation. If you need to contact Vander Jagt Computers, which is normally located at WinchesterPC.Com, you can probably arrive there by using http://www.winchesterpc.com (external link) or http://www.vanderjagtcomputers.com (external link) , but at any rate, 1-540-678-9123 on the telephone works just fine. Thank you for your patience as we resolve this problem.

Also, we would like to let you know that the Visual Link Internet sales office, behind Sheetz across from Ward Plaza on Valley Avenue in Winchester, VA, is an authorized pick-up and drop-off location. Just bring your computer there and let them know you need Vander Jagt Computers (or WinchesterPC.Com) to look at it for you. Diagnosis is still free, and the prices and services are all the same.

FreeArtFoundation.org

This is the new Wiki for the Free Art Foundation. By using TikiWiki? for a database program, it should be much easier for artists to submit and distribute art, comment on other artists' works, and make gradual updates to material.

Rules

Keep in mind a few important rules:

1) Do not EVER submit anything that can't legally be redistributed for free. More specifically, anything submitted on this site is automatically assumed to be BSD licensed. GPL is also an acceptable license, since the "must disclose source with product" clause basically doesn't apply to art. (Other similar licenses may be compatible, too.)
2) This is an open Wiki, and your work might be modified by others. MediaWiki? allows rewinding work, so please take advantage of this if you want to selectively allow some peoples' modifications to your work but not allow others. Open modification of art is the goal of the Free Art Foundation. I've written fiction and tracked music that has turned out so much better after other people have "mercilessly edited" them.
3) So-called "pornographic art" actually is permissible, under certain additional rules:
3a) The art must not violate US laws, since that is where the server is located.
3b) Art that might be called "adult art" must be titled as such with appropriate warnings. Since this server is located in the US, you must comply with US laws regarding notices.
3c) The art must be reasonably compressed since, not surprisingly, it's likely to end up using a lot of bandwidth. If possible, use JPEG for pictures, x.264 or xVid for video, Ogg Vorbis for audio, Speex for audiobooks, and BZip2 or GZip for general purpose compression.
4) Don't break the law! I know this was mentioned in 3a, and it seems obvious, but I can't sufficiently state this important rule. I know many applicable laws are wrong, but we're still under the rule of the land.

To become a new artist, create a Wiki account using the link at the top-right of the page. Feel free to create pages as you can use them.

Future formatting will probably make a more uniform artist page standard, but for now, feel free to upload your art and start editing!

News

  • 03/16/09 — Update regarding registrations: It looks like our name server is borked. Other mail servers don't see our server as a mail server, so our server is unable to receive emails from outside. However, it's receiving its own email, as in from the registration server to the administrators, and it's able to send email. So what this means is that it seems that all the necessary parts for registration and activation work fine. If you need to get in touch with me, you can use my Yahoo! email: I hope that everything works until we can get things properly fixed, and if anyone with BIND9 experience can offer a hand, we can use the help. (-:

  • 03/15/09 — I can blame our recent downtime on the current recession in the US, but I can also say that we should be in better condition from now on. Repair businesses tend to do well in a recession, and Vander Jagt Computers is no exception. However, the registration system may or may not work right now, because the name server still hasn't updated the MX records, and I really have no way to test it.

  • 10/23/07 — Registered user permissions have just been updated to allow public access to edit and create pages. Welcome to the Free Art Foundation Wiki!

The Free Art Foundation needs a few things:

  • A logo - Personally, I'd like a dapper looking anthropomorphic mascot, but I'm open to suggestions.
  • Art - Upload away!
  • An Open Art Script - Some time ago I'd seen (and loved) a Java-based public art board, and I think it would be nice to have something like that for doodling here. The application I saw before was called PaintChat?
  • Money - Donations that are earmarked for the Free Art Foundation will go towards hiring people who can maintain and improve the infrastructure. Do -not- send us money now, though. We don't yet have -that- infrastructure set up! Also, we need to take appropriate steps to stay legal, since the Free Art Foundation is NOT going to be listed as a non-profit organization.
  • Ads - Spread the word! Maybe we could spend some donated money on advertising.
